Egipto: A Cidadela de Salah Al-Din / Egypt: the Citadel of Saladin

A cidadela foi originalmente edificada por Salah Al-Din para protecção da cidade do Cairo.
Foi construída no planalto mais alto do Cairo - junto a Moqattam - e foi bem fortificada.
Foi assento do poder, tendo no seu interior a mesquita Mohammed Ali, a mesquita El-Nasir Mohammed (do período mameluco), o palácio El-Gawhara e vários museus.

The citadel was originaly built by Saladin, in order to protect the city of Cairo.
It was constructed in the highest hill in Cairo - near Mokatam - and it was well fortified.
Power was based here, and may monuments were built within its walls like Mohamed Ali mosque, El-Nasser Mohamed mosque (from the mameluke period), the El-Gawhara palace and several museums.

 Poço escavado dentro da cidadela para trazer água para dentro da fortificação, evitando ficarem à mercê de possíveis cercos.
Este poço foi considerado uma das construções mais difíceis à época, tendo mais de 90 metros de profundidade e tendo sido escavado na secção do planalto com as rochas mais duras.

Well escavated within the citadel to bring water inside the walls, avoiding running out of water in case of a siege.
The well was considered to be one of the most challenging constructions at the time, having more than 90m deep and and being digged inside the hardest rocks of the Mokatam mountain.
