A Grande Esfinge / The Great Sphinx

Esculpida a partir de um único bloco de pedra calcária, a esfinge tem as características faciais de um homem, neste case do Faraó, e o corpo de um magnifico leão, combinando assim a divindade do Faraó com a majestade e poder natural do leão.
A Grande Esfinge tem aproximadamente 73 metros de comprimento e 20 metros de altura, e fica a sul da Grande Pirâmide, fazendo parte do complexo do templo funerário de Khafre (ou Chephren).

Carved out of limestone, the Sphinx has the facial features of a man, in this case the Pharaoh, but the bodu of a  lion, combining the divinity of the Pharaoh with the majesty of the Lion.
The Great Sphinx is approximatly 73m long and 20m high, and stays to the south of the Great Pyramid, being part of the funeral temple complex of Khafre (or Chephren).

 As pedras eram esculpidas com as esquinas de forma inteira, fazendo a junta na parede direita ao invés de ter a junta na esquina, conferindo maior resistência.

The stones were carved with the corner in a single block, having the joint of the stones already in the straight wall instead of having the joint at the corner, porviding more resistence to the wall.

 Após mais de 5000 anos ainda é possível ver restos da pintura que a esfinge terá tido originalmente. Por debaixo da orelha podem ver-se restos de uma linha azul e no tocado podem ver-se linhas paralelas em vermelho e branco.

After more than 5000 is still possible to see parts of the original paint that the sphinx should have had one day. A strip of blue bellow the ear and horizontal red and white strips at the back of the head.

A arte de fazer folhas de papiro no Antigo Egipto / Ancient Egypt's art of making papyrus sheets

Com base em descrições encontradas em sítios arqueológicos, foi possível recuperar a arte de fazer folhas de papiro tal como eram feitas no Antigo Egipto, no tempo dos faraós.

Based on descriptions found at Archaeological sites, it was possibel to recreate the ancient art of making papyrus sheets just as they were done in Ancient Egipt, during Pharos' time.

 Aqui podemos ver o tronco da flor de papiro. É um caule triangular, branco e mole por dentro, verde e rijo por fora.

Here we can see the stalk of the papyrus flower. It is a triangular stalk in shape, white and soft on the inside, green and hard on the outside.

 O caule do papiro é cortado do tamanho que nós queremos que a folha tenha no final.

The stalk of the papyrus is cut in the size we wish for the final papyrus sheet to have.

Aqui corta-se a casca verde deixando apenas o interior branco do caule. Na frente da bancada pode-se ver a planta do papiro.

In here we strip the white part of the stalk from the green exterior. At the front of the desk we can see the original papyrus flower.

 A casca verde é bastante rija e fibrosa, tornando-a bastante resistente. Era utilizada para fazer cestos, assentos para bancos ou cadeiras, entre outras coisas.

The green hull is quite strong and fibrous, what makes it very resistant. It was used to make baskets, stools and chairs' seats, etc.

 Aqui estou a testar a resistência da casca verde. É bastante resistente.

Here I am testing the green hull's resistence. It is strong!

 A parte branca é uma polpa bastante mole e flexível, como é demonstrado aqui.

The white part of the hull is a soft and flexible pulp, as it is shown here.

 Temos que cortar esta parte interior em tiras mais ou menos iguais.

We need to cut the interior part of the hull in more or less equal strips.

 A parte interior do caule do papiro tem bastante água. Como tal, é necessário amassá-las por forma a retirar-lhes a água tornando-as mais resistentes.

Bacause the interior part of the papyrus hull has water, it is necessary to knead them so they can loose the wanter and become more resistent.

 Aqui comprovamos que as tiras estão já mais resistentes.

Here we proved that the strips are already more resistent.

 Depois de serem amassadas, as tiras de papiro são colocadas em água durante alguns dias para ficarem mais rijas. Dependendo do tempo que ficam na água assim ficam mais claras (menos tempo na água) ou mais escuras (mais tempo na água).
Uma vez prontas para fazer a folha de papiro, as tiras são novamente amassadas para retirar a água.

After being knead, the papyrus strips are placed in water for a few days so they can become more stiff. Depending for how long they are left in the water, the papyrus can be lighter (less time in the water) or darker (more time in the water).
Once ready to make the papyrus sheet, the strips are again knead to retrieve all the water.

 Para fazer a folha de papiro, as tiras colocam-se sobre uma base, neste caso um quadrado de feltro. As tiras são colocadas de forma entrelaçada até perfazer a totalidade da folha.

To make the papyrus sheet, the strips are placed over a base, in this case a felt base. The strips are placed in an interlaced way until we have the full lenght of the sheet.

 Uma vez a folha concluída, tapa-se com uma base de feltro igual e coloca-se na prensa que se pode ver ao fundo da bancada. Deve ficar na prensa pelo menos duas semanas.

Once we conclude the sheet, we cover it with another felt base and we place it in the press seen at the end of the desk. It should remain in the press for at least two weeks.

 Uma folha de papiro verdadeira deve ser translucida quando colocada contra a luz, tal como se vê aqui. Podemos ver também a textura da mesma.

A real papyrus sheet should be translucid when holded against the light, as we can see here. We can also see the texture of it.

 Da mesma maneira, uma folha de papiro verdadeira é suave ao toque, como eu pude confirmar.

In the same way, a real papyrus sheet should be smooth to the toutch, as I could prove here.

 No fim tive direito a um marcador de livros em papiro com o meu nome traduzido para hieróglifos.

At the end, I was offered a book marker made from papyrus, with my name on it, translated to hieroglyphs.

As pirâmides do planalto de Gizé / The pyramids from Giza's plateau

A pirâmide de Kufu, ou pirâmide de Cheops, é a maior e mais antiga das três pirâmides do planalto de Gizé. Também conhecida como a Grande Pirâmide, tem 230m de base e 147m de altura (originalmente).
Ao dia de hoje, a apesar de ser a mais antiga, esta é a pirâmide que se encontra melhor conservada. A sua altura e grandeza faz-nos sentir bem pequeninos! É realmente uma das grandes construções feitas pelo homem, que desafiam as leis do tempo.

Kufu's pyramid, or Cheops' pyramid, is the biggest and the oldest of the three pyramids placed in Giza's plateau. Also known as the Great Pyramid, it has 230m at the base and is 147m high (originaly).
Still today, and in spite of being the oldest, this pyramid is the one in best shape. We can definitly feel very small when looking at this amazing construction that stands to defy the laws of time.

Dentro da Grande Pirâmide foram encontradas duas embarcações, que teriam como propósito serem usadas pelo Faraó na sua vida eterna para se deslocarem ao aos seus locais favoritos. Estas embarcações estão a ser recontruídas na traseira da Grande Pirâmide, junto às pirâmides mais pequenas, destinadas às rainhas e à mãe do Faraó.

Inside the Great Pyramid were found two vessels, which had the purpose to be used by the Pharaoh in his eternal life to travel to his favorite places. These vessels are being assembled at the back of the Great Pyramid, near to the smaller pyramids, meant for the queens and the mother of Pharaoh.







A segunda maior pirâmide deste planalto de Gizé é a pirâmide de Khafre, ou também conhecida como pirâmide de Chephren. Esta pirâmide conserva ainda no vértice uma parte do revestimento calcário inicial. Khafre, filho de Kufu para quem foi feita a Grade Pirâmide, não construiu uma pirâmide maior que a de seu pai por respeito. No entanto, recorreu a uma elevação da quota do terreno para que, apesar de ser menor, parecesse por vezes do mesmo tamanho ou até maior do que a Grande Pirâmide, dependendo do ângulo de visão.
Apesar de conservar ainda parte do revestimento calcário, esta pirâmide não se encontra tão bem conservada como a Grande Pirâmide, notando-se já algumas falhas nas arestas.

The second largest pyramid of the Giza Plateau is the Pyramid of Khafre, or also known as the Pyramid of Chephren. This pyramid still retains the apex part of the original limestone flooring. Khafre, son of Kufu for whom the Grade Pyramid was made, didn't built a bigger pyramid than his father out of respect . However, he resorted to a rise in the share of the land .This way, although his pyramid was minor, it would sometimes appeared the same size or even bigger than the Great Pyramid, depending on the viewing angle.
Although still retaining part of the limestone flooring, this pyramid is not as well preserved as the Great Pyramid, noting already some flaws on the edges.

A terceira e mais pequena das pirâmides é a pirâmide de Menkaure, ou pirâmide de Mykerinus. Esta pirâmide tem de base 109m e tem de altura 66m (originalmente). De entre as três é a pirâmide que se encontra em pior estado, sem querer com isto dizer que esteja em más condições.
Menkaure preferiu fazer o revestimento da sua pirâmide em granito, diferenciando-se assim das anteriores construções nas quais se utilizara a pedra calcária. No entanto, por se tratar de uma pedra mais pesada, cedo a pirâmide perdeu o revestimento, tendo apenas junto à base ainda alguns vestígios do revestimento em granito.

The third and smallest of the pyramids is the Pyramid of Menkaure, or Pyramid of Mykerinus. This pyramid's base is 109m and is 66m tall (originally). Among the three is the pyramid that is in worse shape .
Menkaure preferred to do the finishing of his pyramid with granite, thus differing from previous constructions in which  limestone had been used. However, because it is a heavier stone, the pyramid lost its finish early , with only some vestiges of granite near the base coat.
